The apprentice frowned as subtle as he could as he carried the fresh wad of moss to the elders den. He hated being an apprentice- he was never treated right. All these chores, and no action.
Skypaw had just recently become an apprentice- since a moon ago, all he's learned is how to pick fleas of smelly elders. He wanted to practice his gift some more- the Gift of Vines- but unfortunately he hasn't practiced it as much as he had hoped.
But he knew that once he was finished with the boring stuff, he would be back out in the forest training.
The light brown tabby reached the elders den, and placed the bedding down before padding back into the open StoneClan clearing. No mentor in sight- that meant he was free to relax for now.
Cometstar's voice sounded. She strutted smoothly out of her den, head held high. Her perfectly pointed ears were back, and her silvery muzzle was shining in the sun. She padded up to her apprentice with grace, dipping her head once she reached him. Surely it was embarrassing to have your leader-- and mentor-- show you such respect.
"As an apprentice, you must train. When you are a warrior you can rest, but for now we must practice your gift. We shall try to get as far as we can with it before you get your second one."
As his mentor's voice flooded around him, Skypaw shot up embarrassed and surprised. Cometstar had caught him lazing off!
As the leader skimmed the ground, Skypaw's ears turned high to the sky- as if he felt more important than the world at that point. He quickly slouched even lower than Cometstar, feeling ashamed that he had enjoyed so much pride.
But soon his mentors words filled him with a new emotion- relief. He was going to finally train on his Gift! With instant gratitude, the apprentice said as cooly as he could, "Thank you Cometstar, I've had enough of the elders and their crazy tales!"
The thought of receiving a second Gift overwhelmed Skypaw- after all, he barely knew how to use his own! But he was sure that once he became a warrior, he would have already mastered the Gift of Vines. And by then, he would be the greatest warrior that this clan has ever seen!
Besides Cometstar, of course. Skypaw could never see him being greater than his leader and mentor.

"Good morning Cometstar!" a kind, well-mannered voice sang. A young kit leapt out of the apprentice dens, smiling and happy. She scrambled forward and almost made it to the two but tripped on seemingly nothing and ended up doing a forward somersault. Landing in front of Cometstar on her belly, she gave her leader a hopeless grin and quickly got back on her paws. Noticing Skypaw for the first time that morning, she gave him a big smile, as she did with everyone. "Hey there, Skypaw!" she greeted before turning back to Cometstar.
The small she-cat grew grave as she began to speak, sadness weighing deeply on her chest. "Cometstar, about my new mentor..." she began before choking on her next words. Blinking back tears, Blossompaw hung her head in shame. What was she crying for? Whiptail was with her ancestors now. He was out of his misery. So why was she sad? "I need a new mentor, right?" Blossompaw finally croaked out, looking up at Cometstar with a shakey, forced smile.

"Skypaw, you must respect the elders. They can teach you much more than any other."
Cometstar watched as Blossompaw stumbled over, nodding her head slightly. She listened to the young apprentice, fighting back sorrow. Whiptail was a fine warrior who was taken away much before the time was right.
"Of course, Blossompaw. I shall hold your ceremony right away." Of course, the great leader had in her mind a mentor for the young she-cat. She bounded to the meeting area, leaping onto the stone with ease.
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather under the Stone of Many Seasons for a Clan meeting!"

Cometstar's comment pierced Skypaw's conscious. Psh. I can teach myself everything I need to know, I don't need elders to do that!
But deep down, Skypaw was guilty that he had disrespected the elders. He would never admit that to himself, but at the same time he knew that that was the case.
By the time he was finished thinking, Cometstar had called a clan meeting. He bounded over to the Stone of Many Seasons and waited for the meeting to begin.
